First Look At Star Wars: Rise Of The Resistance In Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

Now that the highly anticipated Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Disney’s Hollywood Studios has finally opened at Walt Disney World, all we are waiting for in order to fully enjoy the land, is the most elaborate attraction ever built, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, to open this December. Here’s what we know so far about this one-of-a-kind experience courtesy of Disney:

Opening December 5, 2019, at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance will be one of the most ambitious, advanced and immersive experiences ever undertaken by Walt Disney Imagineering. The innovative new attraction will take guests aboard a full-size transport shuttle before they are captured by a Star Destroyer and wind up in the middle of a climactic battle between the First Order and the Resistance. The harrowing adventure will blur the lines between fantasy and reality on a scale never seen before in a Disney attraction.

Recently Walt Disney Imagineering released additional details about what promises to be one of the most thrilling experiences ever created for a Disney theme park:

  • Guests will join the Resistance and depart from Batuu in a transport ship to meet General Leia Organa at a secret rendezvous point. However, on their way to the hidden base, guests are intercepted and taken prisoner by the First Order as their ship is drawn into the hangar bay of a Star Destroyer. The action then ramps up as guests seek to escape the clutches of Kylo Ren and the First Order.
  • Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance will bring guests face to face with some of their favorite Star Wars characters, including Resistance heroes Rey, Poe and Finn, as well as Kylo Ren and General Hux of the First Order.
  • Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is one of the largest attractions Disney has ever created. Its massive show building is a world unto itself, housing two full-sized AT-AT walkers and a Star Destroyer hangar bay – complete with a TIE fighter and a garrison of Stormtroopers – plus more thrills and surprises.
  • Walt Disney Imagineering will combine multiple ride systems to tell the story of Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. In one sequence, a new simulator experience will give the sensation to guests they are falling from space to crash land on Batuu.
  • During a portion of the experience, guests will race through a Star Destroyer in a trackless ride vehicle featuring an onboard droid that reacts to its surroundings.

If you’re going to be at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in December for the opening of Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, I hope to see you there!

Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run In Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

The wait is finally over…the highly anticipated Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge land in Disney’s Hollywood Studios has opened at Walt Disney World and along with it the new attraction – Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run. Since opening day, the wait time for Smugglers Run has been averaging about a 90+ minute wait. Currently FastPass+ is not being offered, however, that is expected to change in the near future. The reviews for Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run have been mixed. Most guests have expressed enjoyment of the elaborate detailing and theming of the attraction and queue, but many have felt that the experience itself fell flat. The most common description I have seen of Smugglers Run is that it is a cross between Star Tours and Mission: SPACE. Until you have the chance to check out Smugglers Run for yourself, here’s the inside scoop courtesy of Disney:

Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run is an anchor attraction inside the new Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida. It combines immersive storytelling with interactive game play to make guests the protagonists of their own Star Wars adventures in a way never before undertaken by Disney Parks.

Lovingly described at various times as a “piece of junk” or “bucket of bolts,” the Millennium Falcon is the most famous of all Star Wars star ships. On Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, guests 38 inches or taller climb aboard the Falcon in all her ramshackle glory and settle into the cockpit to operate “the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy.” They could just discover the ship has a few surprises left in her, because the Millennium Falcon may not look like much, but she’s got it where it counts.

Following the events of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” Chewbacca brought the Falcon to Black Spire Outpost for repairs at this spaceport on the edge of the galaxy. In exchange for some much-needed replacement parts, Chewie is loaning the Falcon to Hondo Ohnaka, a smuggler who is now making good use of the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs. It is at this point guests enter the story of Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run.

Who Is Hondo Ohnaka and What Does He Want?

  • A fan-favorite miscreant from the “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and “Star Wars Rebels” animated television series, Hondo is a Weequay pirate always looking for the next big score.
  • Hondo is running a “legitimate business” out of the spaceport, called Ohnaka Transport Solutions. When guests meet Hondo in Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, he tells them he has more cargo than he can handle and needs extra flight crews to make some runs for him – especially crews that won’t ask too many questions about the cargo or how Hondo acquired it!

Step Aboard the Falcon

  • When guests accept Hondo’s offer, they enter the Falcon via an access hatch on the ship’s port airlock. Once aboard, they spend some time in the ship’s main hold and lounge, where they can sit at the famous Dejarik (chess) table or poke around at other equipment in the room.

Three Roles to Play – One Goal

  • When it’s time for the mission to begin, guests strap themselves into the Falcon cockpit in groups of six. Each person is assigned one of three critical roles to complete their mission, and guests know it’s their turn to act when buttons light up in the cockpit:
    • Pilots (2) – Work together to steer the ship – the left pilot controls horizontal motion, the right pilot controls vertical motion – avoiding obstacles that could cause damage
    • Gunners (2) – Use blasters and missiles to defend the Falcon and its precious cargo (switching to manual targeting creates an even greater challenge!)
    • Flight Engineers (2) – Keep the Falcon from falling apart on its mission by managing the ship’s systems, repairing any damage the ship encounters and take control of the “special modifications” Hondo installed for these unusual missions

Interactive Gameplay

  • Industrial Light & Magic (the visual effects division of Lucasfilm) collaborated with Walt Disney Imagineering to create the gaming platform and interactive media for Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run.
  • Guests begin their adventure by powering up the Falcon and making the jump to lightspeed. From there, Hondo Ohnaka (with occasional input from Chewbacca) helps guide guests along their mission.
  • If the Falcon sustains damage – such as smashing into obstacles or taking enemy fire – and is not properly repaired, the ship’s handling is affected.
  • At the end of the mission, Hondo informs guests how well they accomplished their objectives.

Authenticity in the Details

  • Walt Disney Imagineers worked with Lucasfilm to ensure authenticity in every detail of the Millennium Falcon – down to the hoses, pipes, switches and even the stickers on the exterior hull. Imagineers visited Pinewood Studios in the United Kingdom to study Falcon film sets and pored over archival Lucasfilm photographs of the ship.
  • Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run marks the first time Hondo Ohnaka has been seen in any form other than an animated on-screen character. Walt Disney Imagineering consulted Hondo’s creator, Dave Filoni, in designing the smuggler’s physical look, ensuring the essence of his character was authentically captured in his Audio-Animatronics figure inside the attraction.
  • Over time, the Millennium Falcon has undergone many modifications. For this mission, Hondo altered the control sticks for the pilot and co-pilot and supplemented the Falcon’s arsenal with a harpoon, among other tweaks.
  • If guests’ mission aboard the Falcon doesn’t go quite as planned, the ship’s hallways will show damage as they leave the attraction.

If you’re going to be at Disney’s Hollywood Studios during the opening weeks of Star Wars: Galaxy’s edge, I hope to see you there!

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Delicious Dishes From A Galaxy Far, Far Away

Now that Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge has opened in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, let’s talk about the delicious dishes and drinks being offered throughout the land. There are lots of fantastic options to choose from for all of the Star Wars foodies out there. Here are the details courtesy of Disney:

In creating Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Walt Disney Imagineering envisioned a land that immerses guests entirely in Star Wars storytelling, using all five of their senses. Thus, food and drink play important roles in deepening guests’ engagement, using taste and smell to play right alongside the wondrous sights and other sensations found within this new land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida. When guests take a bite of Fried Endorian Tip-yip or a swig of a strange-looking concoction, they feel all the more as if they’ve stepped onto the planet Batuu.

The Disney Parks food and beverage creative teams worked hand in hand with Walt Disney Imagineering to develop a diverse and distinctive menu for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. The wide array of delectable creations reinforces Walt Disney Imagineering’s commitment to immersive storytelling and attention to detail in every aspect of this Star Wars experience.

As a remote planet, Batuu is one of the lesser-populated worlds in the Star Wars galaxy, so the food available in Black Spire Outpost has a “farm to table” feel typically found in more rural communities. Food and drink throughout the land hint at an ancient culture, passed down to the current generation of Batuuan residents and are served in unique and exotic vessels.

Oga’s Cantina, for example, is the land’s main watering hole and serves as the heart of Black Spire Outpost. Here, guests gather to share their tales from around the galaxy as they enjoy exotic beverages such as the spicy Bloody Rancor, the foamy Fuzzy Tauntaun or the fruity Carbon Freeze.

Ronto Roasters, named for the large pack animals of Tatooine, draws attention from passersby with its large podracing engine firing up a barbecue pit. When hungry customers queue up to order, they encounter a former smelter droid, 8D-J8, carefully turning the spit of meats. The stall’s signature Ronto Wrap may remind guests of roasted pork and grilled sausage, while the Tatooine Sunset specialty drink may have them reminiscing about gourmet flavored iced tea and lemonade.

The Milk Stand will answer a question four decades in the making: What does Blue Milk taste like? This stall offers two local favorites – Blue Milk and Green Milk. Both provide a frozen blend of exotic tastes and fruity accents, with Green Milk delivering a bit more zing.

At Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo, Chef Strono “Cookie” Tuggs’ transport shuttle sits atop Docking Bay 7 as a mobile kitchen and restaurant, turning the hangar into Tuggs’ Grub. Tuggs’ journeys from system to system allow him to fill his pantry with exotic ingredients he uses to make new and unusual dishes, such as Smoked Kaadu Ribs, Fried Endorian Tip-yip and Batuu-bon for dessert.

The Millennium Falcon is a Star Wars icon, and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge makes dreams come true for guests who’ve wished to step aboard the “fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy.” In Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, they strap into the Falcon cockpit and take the controls as pilots, gunners or flight engineers on a mission to deliver smuggled goods while avoiding any … unnecessary entanglements.

Stroll the Black Spire Outpost Marketplace

Black Spire Outpost in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is home to a bustling marketplace, full of vendors showcasing wares from across the galaxy. Guests can pick up authentic Batuuan attire with a stop at Black Spire Outfitters, start a collection of toys at Toydarian Toymakers, or peek into the cages in the Creature Stall. The marketplace’s twisting pathway is just waiting to be explored, with something new to see seemingly around every turn.

Take a Swig of Blue Milk

Ever since Luke Skywalker sat down for a family meal in “Star Wars: A New Hope,” Star Wars fans have had this burning question: What does Blue Milk taste like? Now at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, they finally have their answer. The Milk Stand in Black Spire Outpost offers both Blue Milk and Green Milk, delicious frozen blends with dashes of fruity accents.

Grab a Bite to Go at Ronto Roasters

Whether it’s the large podracing engine hanging overhead, the former smelter droid turning a spit of meats or just the savory smells wafting by, Ronto Roasters is sure to grab guests’ attention. This quick-service location offers mouth-watering Ronto Wraps and sweet-or-spicy Nuna Turkey Jerky, as well as a selection of specialty beverages.

Craft a Lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop

Constructing a lightsaber is a rite of passage in the life of a Jedi, as this elegant weapon from a more civilized age is attuned to its owner through the Force. Guests in Savi’s Workshop – Handbuilt Lightsabers feel the presence of the Force as they craft their own lightsabers, customizing them with various hilts, décor and the all-important kyber crystals.

Build a Droid Inside the Droid Depot

Droids can be some of the most loyal companions in the entire Star Wars galaxy, and now guests have the chance to build and customize their own astromech friends at the Droid Depot. Patrons pick pieces and parts off a conveyor belt to construct one of two core models (R-series or BB-series), which can then interact with elements throughout Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

Drop By for a Drink at Oga’s Cantina

The heartbeat of Black Spire Outpost, Oga’s Cantina is a place where even the blaster-bolt scorches on the walls tell a story. Guests can gather to share their own tales from around the galaxy as they enjoy exotic beverages served in unique vessels and listen to spirited musical entertainment from DJ R-3X, the former droid pilot from Star Tours. Whether sidling up to the cantina’s counter or sliding into one of the establishment’s back booths, this is the best place to catch up on local gossip, make a new friend or form a new alliance.

Hack Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge with the Play Disney Parks Mobile App

When accessed inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, the Play Disney Parks app transforms guests’ mobile devices into their very own Star Wars: Datapad. They can then scan the contents hidden inside containers, translate languages, and tune into communications happening throughout the land. Guests can also use this tool to hack into droids and door panels (what the locals call “slicing”) to unlock additional stories.

Support the Resistance or the First Order to Gain Outpost Control

Using the Play Disney Parks mobile app, guests can play together in a game called “Outpost Control” that takes place across the land. Guests can choose to support either the Resistance or the First Order by hacking the blinking light panels next to doorways throughout Black Spire Outpost. The faction that controls the majority of these panels first wins the game and demonstrates their allegiance to their side’s cause. The conflict plays out multiple times throughout the day.

Be on the Lookout for Kylo Ren, Rey and Other Star Wars Characters

Guests should keep their eyes open as they explore Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, because they may encounter heroes of the Resistance or agents of the First Order. Supreme Leader Kylo Ren lands at Black Spire Outpost and gathers Stormtroopers to help him hunt for Resistance fighter Rey. Guests may also encounter Millennium Falcon co-pilot Chewbacca or Resistance spy Vi Moradi.
